Hamlet

Jun-Jul 2026

Hamlet, a collaboration between Kumiko Ueda and SPAC originally staged in autumn 2025, returns this summer to the Shizuoka Performing Arts Center.

Reimagining the Shakespearean classic through the memories seen from beneath the water by the drowned Ophelia, the production boldly — and unexpectedly humorously — reconstructs Hamlet into a dreamlike world of remembrance.

In this tragedy of revenge set in the Danish court, Horatio, the sole survivor, continues to stand before the audience, trying to fulfill the dying wish of his closest friend Hamlet: “Tell my story.”
But then, strange beings claiming to be the dead Ophelia — or perhaps Ophelias!? — suddenly intrude and begin telling Hamlet’s story in their own way. Horatio, convinced that he is the rightful storyteller, tries to correct the narrative, but…

The work has been selected for the SOIL program organized by the Japan Performing Arts Solidarity Network, and is expected to develop internationally.
