Establishment of a new organization
Kumiko Ueda aims to create works that sit between avant-garde and entertainment, expressing critical themes in interesting and appealing ways. We are trying to develop ways to enjoy theatrical culture so that performances that deeply question the issues of our time can be delivered to as wide a range of people as possible at low cost as a place for everyday play.
The organization ”projectumï” was established in January 2024 as the basis for its production. This is not a theater company to which actors belong, but an organization that manages Kumiko Ueda’s activities. The organization Projectumï does not have any claims to it, and its name does not have any meaning. It is colorless and transparent.
Thank you for your continued support of Kumiko Ueda and projectumï.
▪️Statement
A long time ago, I was almost killed by someone I didn’t know on the street at night in a desert town. By entering the fundamental space of the boundary between life and death, I remembered that I was actually alive. My daily life has changed from something like a scene I could only vaguely see through the glass while being rocked by a train, to a vivid experience that feels like being thrown off a train and walking out into the hot sun. The color was still named green, the food tasted complex, and my appetite returned.
I want theaters to have this kind of power. (Be safe!)
In a society that continues to expand and reproduce, we are constantly driven towards our goals and live our lives trying not to feel various sensations, so I would like to search for a path to the fundamental space that escapes from objective time. .
In the future, I would like to develop ways to reach people through my works in regions where there is not much theater production, such as my hometown of Nara.
◾️Initiatives to prevent harassment in creative workplaces
Kumiko Ueda and projectuï, an organization that plans and manages works related to Kumiko Ueda, are working to prevent harassment in the creative workplace using the following methods.
Kumiko Ueda will reconsider the hierarchy of stage production, with the director at the top, and explore creative methods that allow artists to respect each other and work together safely on an equal footing.
In order to improve the environment, we have established a harassment consultation desk staffed by qualified personnel, and in the 2024 project, artists with specialized knowledge will serve as observers and point out any suspected harassment that occurs during rehearsals or other occasions.
Kumiko Ueda and the projectumï organization are determined to aim for more valuable creations in an environment where individual dignity is not compromised in the name of art and culture.
